Bills to expand overhaul of criminal justice system advance

BATON ROUGE — A House committee approved a bill on Tuesday that would limit Louisiana’s sentencing law for repeat offenders only to violent crimes. The bill, sponsored by Rep. Randal Gaines, D-LaPlace, is part of an effort to expand the overhaul of Louisiana’s criminal justice system that began in 2017. It also would sharply reduce the number of people serving lengthy incarcerations. The bill passed without objection in the House Committee of Administration of Criminal Justice. Louisiana stil

Bill would allow patients to inhale cannabis for medicinal purposes

A state Senate committee advanced a bill Wednesday that would allow patients to inhale cannabis for medicinal purposes and would no longer require that prescribing physicians live in the state. The proposal, sponsored by Rep. Ted James, D-Baton Rouge, is among several bills looking to update the state’s cannabis laws this session. The inhalation bill would loosen the laws under which physicians could recommend the use of medical marijuana for patients diagnosed with debilitating medical condit

Revenue Estimating Conference reaches vote to increase fund forecast by $110M

The group that projects the state’s revenue finally recognized a brighter outlook after months of partisan infighting. The state’s Revenue Estimating Conference on Wednesday reached the unanimous vote needed to increase this year’s state general fund forecast by $110 million and next year’s forecast by $119 million. Now that the forecast is approved, lawmakers are tasked with deciding what to do with the extra revenue. Gov. John Bel Edwards has proposed spending it on a pay raise for teachers

Gov. Edwards presents hopeful State of the State address

Louisiana Governor John Bel Edwards presented a hopeful State of the State address today at the Capitol to open the 2019 legislative session. Edwards’ tone stood in sharp contrast to the last few sessions in which lawmakers fought extensively over how to solve state budget problems. Edwards, a Democrat who is campaigning for re-election, pointed to how the state’s $2 billion deficit has turned into a surplus and said his top priority this year is pay raises for teachers. He is seeking $1,000

Two of the biggest names in Dance music came together to create one of the most intricate tracks of the year. As Tropical Storm Barry is barrelling toward the Gulf Coast, G Jones and Eprom, aka Shades, threw a hurricane of a track into the sonic atmosphere. There’s a calm minute-long ambiance just prior to the storm. When the storm finally hits, it hits hard and clean. The drop is a wild assortment of bleeps and bass swooshes and arps and crashes. It’s computer music at its finest, made by two

'Hi This Is Flume' Exceeds All Expectations [Review]

After remaining relatively quiet for two years, Hi This Is Flume reaffirms the 27-year-old artist’s standing as one of the most ingenious and capable creatives in the game who continues to push the boundaries of expression. Harley last released music in 2017 with two Skin Companion EPs. And for two years, fans eagerly awaited his next gem. Now, three years after Skin, Harley gives us 17 new songs accompanied by an absolutely beautiful trip of a video created by Jonathan Zawada. How often do yo

One Of Dubstep's OGs Is Stopping At Republic NOLA, Here's Why You Shouldn't Miss It

He’s one of the most recognizable and respected names in electronica. He’s a ghost and an ex-pro basketball player. His name is Caspa and he’s gracing the Crescent City with his presence Saturday, February 9. The UK dubstep lord is known for his dark, aggressive and often straightforward beats. His tracks radiate of the unabashed underground. Whether he’s melding high pitch chants with rumbling basslines in “Get Higher” or wobbling us deeper down the rabbit hole in “Deja Vu,” Caspa is guarantee

TVBOO's New EP Solidifies his Place in the Bass Scene

The New Orleans based producer/DJ has been steadily rising through the ranks of the underground bass scene. This new 3-track EP signals that he’s ready to take 2019 by storm. “Limitations,” the first track and previously released single wastes no time acquainting listeners with TVBOO’s intricate sound design and attention to detail. My personal favorite, however, is “Hottah.” The sound design is next level. It feels familiar but is different than anything I’ve heard before. There’s a saying th

CharlesTheFirst's Debut Album Comprehensively Unites Nature and Electronica

In an electronic world oversaturated with producers hell-bent on one-upping one another with how weird or how heavy they can produce their tracks, CharlesTheFirst offers an intimate breath of fresh air. His debut album, The Ascent, is a harmonious marriage of nature and electronica. (Just look at the cover art: snow-covered mountains topped with a visual FX filter.) Oftentimes, his sounds don’t sound forced or even computer-generated. If anything, the producer seems to harness both the darker a

Come Over When You're Sober, Pt. 2: A Heartbreaking Reminder That Lil Peep's Career Was Just Beginning

Lil Peep’s new album is raw, real and vulnerable – as he always was. The first half of the opening track “Broken Smile (My All)” introduces the album in a beautifully haunting tone. Over a broken piano and a ticking clock that broods onward, Peep gently mumbles the first lyrics of the album: “I gotta go right now, that’s all.” Given Peep’s passing almost one year ago, the first two minutes of the album are chilling, to say the least. The 13-track album includes previously released singles “Run

HiJinx Announces Monumental Lineup For First-Year Fest [Details Inside]

Peekaboo & G-Rex Join Forces For Sinister New Single 'Babatunde'

The two rising producers just released a haunting new track on WAKAAN. “Babatunde” is attempting to resurrect a demon through a computer screen. It’s a minimalistic yet heavy slapper that incorporates elements of trap and dub while paradoxically sticking to WAKAAN‘s brand of freeform bass. PEEKABOO and G-REX expertly detail every bar with subtle clicks and samples. This is PEEKABOO‘s third installment on Liquid Stranger‘s label and G-REX‘s first. The two artists previously collaborated for a r

Relive the Magic of Basscenter XI [Read + Watch]

The lasers have dimmed, the confetti has settled, and the bass is off. Bassnectar‘s 11th annual celebration in Hampton, Virginia has concluded. Let me tell you all about our journey in The Mothership. I used to be skeptical of Lorin Ashton. I couldn’t understand why his fans traveled across the country on a type of religious pilgrimage for his curated events. Last year, I gave him a chance, sat in a car for 18 hours, and attended Basscenter X. I immediately understood the hype. I kept repeating

Champagne Drip Talks Workflow, Inspiration & Obelisk EP [Interview]

Champagne Drip’s musicality encompasses a plethora of genres and vibes. His latest project Obelisk EP is weird and wonderful. It’s a melodic spin on experimental bass. Check out what he had to say about the project & more. “It’s changed a LOT.  When I first started Champagne Drip, the vibe was a 180-degree shift from what I had become known for throughout the years.  As I’ve developed I’ve gotten away from the initial tropical, light-hearted future-bass sound and gone back towards my roots with

Bassnectar Releases Reflective Pt. 3; Here’s Why We Love It

Just short of a week before Basscenter XI, Bassnectar released the remainder of the third part in his Reflective series. Reflective Pt. 3 is an avant-garde collection of diverse tracks, showcasing everything we love about Bassnectar. I’ll skip over “Heavyweight Sound” and “High,” as we’ve already discussed those tracks here and here. “FSOSF” is a remix of a track on his 2007 album Underground Communication. In true Bassnectar fashion, the song washes over a listener and provides a simple remin

Klutch Releases Emotional, Unconventional '(Dis)harmony' EP

“It’s imperfect, unpolished, and jagged. It’s a part of myself that I was afraid of showing.” – Klutch New Orleans native Klutch just dropped one of the most personal & creative projects of 2018. This is by no means a typical electronic project…or a typical project at all. (Dis)harmony is composed of five tracks entitled: “This” “Is” “A” “Healing” “Process.” There are so many emotions wrapped up in this album, and that might be why each song sounds vastly different than the prior. Even on an i

Remember That Beethoven Remix From Dead Rocks? It Just Dropped [Listen]

Last week we reported on RUSKO DROPPing AN INCREDIBLE REMIX OF BEETHOVEN’S FÜR ELISE AT DEAD ROCKS. And today, that wonderful remix was released by New Orleans producer Klutch. The song opens with the recognizable piano melody & arpeggios we’ve all heard before, or even maybe learned at some point. Within 40 seconds, however, Klutch begins to bring this timeless classic into an electronic context of the 21st century. The drop is still unmistakably Für Elise, expressed now in wubs rather than pi

Paper Diamond, One of Dance Music OGs, Returns With His Diverse 11-Track LP 'Holograms'

After teasing the album with singles “Bass Real Big,” “Downfalls,” and Billboard acclaimed “WORK 9000,” Paper Diamond is back with his long-awaited LP Holograms. A true OG to the game, Paper Diamond is back after a long hiatus. If you’ve been around electronic music for several years, then you probably know of Paper Diamond. But if you haven’t, like me, then now is the perfect time to get acquainted with his name and a multitude of styles. The minute-long opening track, “Hologram,” is a simple

The Daily Reveille: Opinion

Opinion: College offers more than a diploma, educational experience

After four short years, I’m graduating in a few weeks. I wish I could stay around a bit longer. Despite everyone’s assumptions that I’m excited to move on to the next phase of my life, I feel like I’m just beginning to take advantage of everything the University has to offer. The last four years have been painfully challenging and equally rewarding. I have memories, knowledge and relationships that I’ll cherish for the rest of my life thanks to LSU. However, I do wish I could press rewind and redo a few things. I hope these next few paragraphs provide the guidance I should have taken more seriously.

Opinion: Forgiveness offers health benefits, worth practicing daily

Think of forgiveness as another muscle; start small and work your way up. You may not be able to forgive that friend who wronged you quite yet, but you can start forgiving a stranger who cuts you off in traffic or a boss who scolds you for no good reason. It might be uncomfortable and frustrating at first, but if the world’s great religions, psychology and my personal experience tell you anything, it’s that it’ll be worth it in the long run.
